Lemon Stripes Sunroom

I shared photos of our sunroom over the summer, and while it looked super cute, it wasn’t all that functional. Even though we have three sitting rooms (a formal living room, a man cave in the basement, and this sunroom), we never felt like we had our go-to cozy hang-out family room. That was something that kept gnawing at me, so I knew we had to make a change. Over the last few months, we’ve slowly been updating this space (on a budget!) to make it the coziest spot in the house, and we now spend more time here than any other room!

The first step was a sofa. We knew we wanted a sectional that we could just sink into after a long day of work. We found it in this big grey gem of a couch. I wish I could put into words how comfortable it is, but I don’t think that’s possible! I wanted something grey and on the lighter side because the walls are already so dark. We stuck to that strategy for the rug, and went with this diamond-patterned jute that is much thicker and softer than most natural-fiber rugs. It’s also hard for it to look dirty, something important when you have a big dog that spends lots of time outside.

Because the room is fairly small and the sectional is so big, I moved out the big, clunky rope coffee table (seen here) and moved this glass one in from the living room (which I replaced, photos coming soon!). Having glass and a mirror in that space makes it look much bigger, and the shape fits better with the couch.

The most random part of this room update was the electric fireplace in the corner. While I was super against the idea of a fake fireplace at first, it was totally necessary because this room was not-so-well-thought-out addition and the people who put it in (before we bought the house), didn’t insulate the room at all. In the winter it’s freezing and we needed a quick solution until we can invest in a heating system for this space. The “fireplace” actually does the trick and keeps us toasty on movie nights. And it doesn’t look half as bad as I thought it would.

For a final touch, I added two brass mirrors on either side of the big window to open up the space even more, and accessorized with throw pillows and cozy blankets (I had this one monogrammed by my friend Brooke!).

This space turned out so well. It is so nice to have a gathering space in your home and in the winter months it is great to be able to see the outdoors, while staying warm and cozy. I love the blue in this room it really ties together the furniture and compliments the gold accents.

Yes! They’re so great once you actually put them in the right place and style them into the room. So glad someone else did this too!

It’s insanely soft for a natural fiber rug which is why we ended up going with it. It does shed a bit but it’s going away after two weeks which is good. Love having bare feet on it. Over NYE, my friend’s baby was visiting and he was crawling around on it comfortably!

  12. Great makeover! The space looks so cozy and functional. Would you mind sharing about the softness of the rug? I love the look but I know natural fibers can be a bit tough sometimes (currently I have one and I don’t like having bare feet on it). Thanks for sharing as always, Julia! 🙂

For sure! I actually got it at Home Depot (linked above) and it is totally moveable like any space heater… it just happens to look like a fireplace. You can set the heat to different temperatures which is awesome too. Another great feature is that I can put stuff on top of it and it doesn’t get hot. Love it so far!

Love what you have done with the space! I was also unsure about putting in a “fake” fireplace but it became my only option due to changing codes in our city. I have two, one in the living room and one in our bedroom, and actually love it! While I miss the smell of a real wood burning fire, I don’t miss the mess or the danger sometimes associated with them! In the winter we keep just the light on (no heat) and I love having the look of flames while I sleep. Enjoy your new space! xx Rox-Anne, Celebratingthislife.ca
